Summary of the talk:
I will cover examples of long-term effects of premature birth and low birth weight on ocular geometry, neuroretinal tissue and ocular diseases. I will tell the differences between the effects of prematurity and nutritional status at birth on ocular health using data from the Gutenberg Health Study and the Gutenberg Prematurity Eye Study. I will also share the aims and design for a recently recruited birth cohort study in children and adolescents at the University Medical Center Mainz.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this talk, attendees will be able to:
•    To appreciate the clinical relevance of prematurity on ocular health;
•    To be able to differentiate different perinatal effects on health outcomes.

Biography:
Alexander K. Schuster holds the professorship for ophthalmic health service research at the University Medical Center Mainz. He studied medicine and medical physics at Medical Faculty Mannheim of the University of Heidelberg and completed his doctorate at the Mannheim Institute for Public Health. In addition, he holds a master-degree in epidemiology, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a specialist in glaucoma. His research interests are ophthalmological epidemiology and health care research focusing on the occurrence of eye diseases and their risk factors including the lifelong alterations caused by prematurity and its associated factors.
