Abstract:
Since the advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART), people with HIV (PWH) can live long, healthy lives. As this population ages, more than half of PWH in the United States (US) are now 50 years or older, the burden of cancer is increasing and evolving, driven by higher prevalence of cancer risk factors and longer lifespans. The Veterans Aging Cohort Study-HIV (VACS-HIV) cohort includes all Veterans with HIV (N~60,000) and 2:1 demographically matched Veterans without HIV receiving care in the US Veterans Health Administration (VA) healthcare system. Research using VACS data advances our understanding of the impact of HIV, HIV treatment, and comorbid conditions, such as cancer, on morbidity and mortality among PWH. This talk will introduce VACS and its associated cohorts, highlight its network of collaborators and strong mentorship tradition, and present examples of impactful HIV and cancer research along with future directions for the cohort.
